The Farm
This is our third year building the farm. The first year was trial and error, but it started the journey. After training in organic farming and spending time at Spring Rain Farm, our second year produced yields far beyond expectations.
Year three focuses on rainwater collection, with about 1,300 gallons already stored. This site documents the farm and supports our producer permit records. Below is the crop plan for 2,000 sq ft of tilled soil, requiring about 3,500 gallons of water for the season.
Enjoy!
Seed / Plant Information
(all images and some text from our friends at Johnny Seed)
Provider Organic Bean Seed
Provider can be planted earlier than other beans because it tolerates cool soils. Compact plants are easy to grow and adaptable to diverse soil and climate conditions. Produces 5 1/2" fleshy, round pod green beans. Purple seeds. Bush bean. USDA Certified Organic.
We grew this last year and got amazing results
- Total plants this year = about 200
- Total last year about 50
- Germ was about 95%
- Down side is it needs a lot of water in the desert.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
The Mormon Crickets and Grasshoppers did like this plant and we had issues
protecting the smaller plants. I plan on mixing this plant with something like onions to help off set bugs .
Soil was almost 100 percent native to this region of 5B
Jade Organic Bean Seed
Arguably the best-tasting bush bean we offer, Jade's 6–7", slender, deep green pods are exceptionally tender and delicious. High-yielding even under heat or cold stress, Jade has been a customer favorite since its debut in our 1992 catalog. Pale green seeds. Bush bean. USDA Certified Organic.
Last year we had issues with these beans during the mid summer freeze. Around the middle of June we had our normal freeze. In 2025 the freeze lasted 2 days with a low of 18 degrees. This plant did not due well and we lost most of the plants. We had to do a complete replant around the third week of June.
The germ was very high nearly perfect but the growth was slow. We will try again with at least 100 to 200 plants. This like the Jade needs a lot of water. We like the Jade used 100% native soil with only top soil add. We also like the Jade added organic Nitrogen.
- Total plants this year = about 200
- Total last year about 50
- Germ was about 95%
- Down side is it needs a lot of water in the desert.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
Merlin Organic (F1) Beet Seed
Exceptionally smooth, uniform, and sweet.
Smooth, uniform, round roots with high sugar content. Tops are somewhat smaller than Red Ace and can be used for bunching. Our best-tasting beet. Also available with NOP-compliant pelleting. USDA Certified Organic.
Last year we did not plant any Beets. The year before we planted over 100 and had a good germ of about 80%. None of those seeds from Johnny Seeds.
However, i could not get anything to grow past a small size. It was like tons of small little plants that did nothing. Something is missing in the soil. That year the seeds came from Home Depot. We will see how things turn out this year.
- Total plants this year = about 100
- Total 2 last years about 200
- Germ was about 95% but nothing grew past germ
- Not sure of water need but we did pour a lot of water.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- This plant did well during the June freeze.
Tempest Org - Yellow Summer Squash Seed
Yellow crookneck with vibrant color, gourmet flavor, distinctive ridges, and subtle striping. Tempest's 4-7" fruits have a rich, nutty flavor and pleasantly firm texture. Versatile in the kitchen, it retains its shape, texture, and color through a multitude of cooking methods, from grilling and roasting to pickling and braising.
These grew really well last year with almost 100% germ. I had no insect issues and only problem was i planted to close together never guessing the plants would grow so large in the middle of the high desert.
USDA Certified Organic.
- Total plants this year = about 100
- Total 2 last years about 50
- Germ was about 100%
- Plants got so large it was difficult to manage watering.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- This plant did well during the June freeze.
Down side is plant gets to large and only the bee flies seemed interested in Pollination resulting in large number of flowers never pollinated.
Block Party Organic (F1) Butternut Squash Seed
Our highest-yielding butternut.
We lovingly referred to Block Party as ‘Miracle' and ‘Saint Butternut' in our breeding nursery because it was just too good to be true. Both its yield and storage results were unbelievably high without compromising on flavor.
- Total plants this year = about 100
- Total last year about 0
- Germ was about . We have no idea yet
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
Much to be learned from this new plant. It is part of squash family so my guess is it will do well.
more as we learn more.
Boro Organic (F1) Beet Seed
Fast-maturing beet with strong tops.
Widely adapted and reliable. Smooth, rich red skin and excellent flavor. Attractive, fine taproot. Big healthy tops. Stores well through the winter in proper conditions. Also available with NOP-compliant pelleting. USDA Certified Organic.
I did not grow any in 2025 and tried about 50 in 2024 to total failure.
- Total plants this year = about 50
- Total 2 last years about 50
- Germ was about 80%
- They all seem to come out of the ground... grow a few leaves then stop
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- This plant did well during the June freeze.
Not sure why i am trying again. See what happens.. Will not dedicate large area to these guys.
Nelson Radish Seed
A more refined French Breakfast type.
Straight candy-red roots resist pithiness better than other long French types. Compared to French Breakfast, roots are shorter, wider, and show less white on the tips. Responds better to tight spacing. Improved top strength.
- Total plants this year = about 200
- Total 2 last years about 75
- Germ was about 95%
- Very little trouble growing. We grew to close so a lot of thinning.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- However, we planted this twice for double return. Second planting = 50
- This plant did well during the June freeze.
All types of radish did really well. We are double down our efforts and increasing our variety of this plant as you can see on this page.
French Breakfast Organic Radish Seed
Classic French Breakfast type.
A well-maintained strain of this market staple. Longer than Nelson, with more white on the tip. Large healthy tops. After trying many strains we found this to be the best.
- Total plants this year = about 350
- Total 2 last years about 100
- Germ was about 95%
- Very little trouble growing. We grew to close so a lot of thinning.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- However, we planted this twice for double return. Second planting = 50
- This plant did well during the June freeze.
This is an amazing tasting Radish. I hope to plant as many as we can water and fit on our cultivated land. We did not have to do anything to the soil.
Crunchy King (F1) Radish Seed
Even maturity and a long harvest window.
Produces blemish-free red spheres with remarkably even maturity for consistently high pack-outs. Slower maturing than Rover, Crunchy King holds well in the field for a longer harvest window. Dense tops help inhibit weeds.
We may plant this radish between other plants to reduce insect issues as well.
Total plants this year = about 150
Total 2 last years about 100
Germ was about 95%
Very little trouble growing. We grew to close so a lot of thinning.
Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
This plant did well during the June freeze.
This radish was a bit hot but required no changes to the soil. Grew very well in native soil and normal amounts of direct water.
Easter Egg II Radish Seed
Multicolor mix.
Make beautiful bunches with this mix of red, purple, pink, and white round radishes. Maturing over an extended period of time, they stay crisp and mild even when large. Great fun for children and adults alike.
We may plant this radish between other plants to reduce insect issues as well.
- Total plants this year = about 150
- Total 2 last years about 50
- Germ was about 95%
- Very little trouble growing. We grew to close so a lot of thinning.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
This plant did well during the June freeze.
Some sections where planted had trouble growing very fast and in some cases never more than an inch in height. Not sure why.
Dunja Organic (F1) Zucchini Squash Seed
Organic, early, powdery mildew resistant.
A high-yielder of medium-dark green, straight zucchinis. Open plants and short spines make for an easy harvest. USDA Certified Organic.
- Total plants this year = about 100
- Total 2 last years about 50
- Germ was about 95%
- Very little trouble growing.
- Like the squash we grew to close together and they grew very large
- Once super large difficult to water using our system.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
I will change the way we water and plant both the Zucchini and the Squash. It was difficult to max the water quality and the pollination of the plants.
In short in native soil they grew super well.
Duchess (F1) Pumpkin Seed
Truly royal performance.
A consistent favorite in the pumpkin trials every year, Duchess reliably produces high yields with consistent quality and strong powdery mildew resistance. The same predictability and low cull rates as Renegade PMR, but larger and with an eye-catching look: deep orange color and double-ribbing catch the autumn's afternoon glow for a stunning effect. Not just a workhorse; a show-horse! Avg. 19–21 lb. Bred by Dr. Lindsay Wyatt at Johnny's in collaboration with UNH.
We have no idea how well this will grow in native desert soil or in region 5B
My biggest concern is water need and if it fits into our water budget.
- Total plants 30
Super Max (F1) Cucumber Seed
High consistent yields of very uniform, blocky, dark-skinned 4 1/2" picklers borne on vigorous vines. A strong disease package to rival Max Pack. Suitable for both staked and on-ground cultivation methods. A small seed cavity, dense flesh, and sweet flavor make for perfect pickles. Sustained yields over a full season.
Disease Resistance:
- Anthracnose (Intermediate)
- Cucumber Mosaic Virus (High)
- Papaya Ringspot Virus (High)
- Powdery Mildew (Intermediate)
- Scab (High)
- Target Spot (High)
- Watermelon Mosaic Virus (High)
- Zucchini Yellow Mosaic Virus (High)
Last year we planted 20 this year we will plant 30. Last year we managed to get one to survive and it produced one very small cucumber. About 2 inches. I saved it.. because i was proud of the guy. Not sure why i bought more. Must be stupid.
Shakespeare – Spring-Planted Onion Sets
Home Depot Onions as well
Can be planted in the spring for a "green top" yellow cooking onion by the beginning of July and a dried bulb by the end of July. Fills the gap between last year's storage onions and this year's crop from seed. Uniform, sweet, and flavorful, Shakespeare bulbs have excellent storage potential when well-cured.
- Total plants this year = about 400
- Total 2 last years about 100
- Germ was about 75%
- Very little trouble growing but some did not grow.
- Last year 100% from Home Depot
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- Used a limited amount of water
- Did not grow close enough to each other.
- Those who grew 99% got harvested.
This is perfect for the desert farm including all the squash and radishes.
Hope to get a ton of these this year and better bulb placement.

Tomato Plants
Home Depot Tomato Plants. Variety of types. Greenhouse grown.
More info after we get them growing and purchased.
May not sell these to the public.

Potatoes
We planted about 4 varieties last year and about 16 total plants. Of the plants only 4 made it the rest died of variety of issues
The 4 plants that grew produced about 20 total potatoes or a good collection
This year we try again. Not sure how many i will plant or how much room i will have.
A big water waster with very low yield.

Butterfingers Org (F1) Yellow Summer Squash
Exclusive! Excellent yield potential.
Very uniform, attractive fruits. Semi-open, spineless plants result in easier harvesting and fewer blemishes. Early, with a long harvest period. Compared to Slick Pik® YS 26, which it replaced, fruit quality is much improved and yields are higher. Bred by the late Dr. Brent Loy of UNH. USDA Certified Organic.
Disease Resistance:
- Total plants this year = about 100
- Total last year about 50
- Germ was about 100%
- Plants got so large it was difficult to manage watering.
- Region 5B limits meant planting around third week of May last year
- This plant did well during the June freeze.
Down side is plant gets to large and only the bee flies seemed interested in Pollination resulting in large number of flowers never pollinated.
Issues with water and growth control.
